Downton Village

The scenes in Downton village were filmed in the very picturesque village of Bampton in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. Here, many of the outdoor scenes of Downton Village and Crawley House were captured along with the famous village hospital.

Lady Sybil's elopement

One of the most controversial story lines in the series came when Lady sybil eloped with the family chauffeur, Branson. The Swan Inn in Swinbrook provided the location for this most romantic plot. Swinbrook is another beautiful icturesque village where time seems to have stood still.

Downton picnic party

The setting for the very elaborate picnic party attended by all of the Crawley family was Greys Court, a National Trust property in the Chiltern Hills near Henley. It was chosen for the peaceful setting with the coutry house in the background. The house, gardens and maze here are well worth a visit.

Yew Tree Farm

Remember Yew Tree Farm, the home of Mr Drewe and his family who took in Lady Edith's child? Its exact location is Cogges Manor Farm, near Witney. Here, you can not only visit the film locations, but also take refreshments in the cafe, browse in the shop, visit the gardens and farm animals.

The Village pub

The scene of the village pub is the old Forge in Shilton, a small, little known village in the Oxfordhsire Cotswolds, along with the ford where another rural scene was filmed.

Highclere Castle

Oxfordshire is not very far away from the famous Highclere Castle in Newbury which formed the location of the home of the Crawley family and the consistent backdrop to the whole series. Here, there are also the famous gardens designed by the famous Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
